I came to Canada two years ago, the first day when I landed in Vancouver, I was told from my landlord and friend that it was really hard to get a job here, especially in Vancouver. My landlord`s daughter didn`t find a job in 6 years, although she got UBC Science bachelor degree. From then on, getting a job became the first concern in my mind.
When I finished second semester in my program, I was introduced to an education company, there I worked part-time for one year, although the work is kind of general office work, it gained some experience in my resume. I understand if my goal is to get a job in accounting area, my previous experience is not enough, I totally didn’t know how companies do in Canada, I didn`t know how to use accounting software, and I even didn`t know the whole process of accounting apartment. When I read the Job Descriptions online, I found I didn`t have idea of those requirements. At that moment, I realized I need to enrich and refresh my knowledge in accounting, and how to get real practical knowledge became a problem. One day in December, somewhat accidently, I attended an public class in Vic training, I was inspired by DQ`s presentation, and sketched my career path in mind. When I arrived home, I carefully browse Vic`s website and when I read the Accounting co-op class, I found a perfect match between what I want and what they offer.
Accounting co-op class lasts for one month. There I got idea of the whole accounting process, including A/P, A/R, Payroll, monthly reconciliation and Year-end close. Mr. William is very knowledgeable, he is able to give you an answer in ANY accounting related questions. He leaded us to do bookkeeping for 3 month real case in Quickbooks (they provide 1 year invoices, I had class on the last week, so I just finished 3 month), we practiced how to deal with general problems in daily life. He also told us some detail thing in accounting, which help build good working habit. The class benefits me a lot, only if I really did things before, I can present it to potential employers. I’m now working in a CGA firm, which is a good place to improve my accounting knowledge and gain experience.
Thanks Mr.William for imparting knowledge and answer our questions patiently, Thanks DQ for modifying my resume to make it concrete and weighty. Thanks David for arriving at 8:00 am every day to provide us a classroom, Thanks Sunny for leading us to practice after working hours and giving me useful advice after class. Thanks all the classmates, we studied together and we’ll all get ideal job in the future. Thanks Victoria for calling those mentors and students together!
